Protan waterproofing system
challenge
The development by Blacklight Capital Partners to the north of Liverpool city centre consists of two tall towers, one of 16 storeys, the other a bit shorter at 10 storeys, which provide views across the city and over the Mersey estuary.
Special attention needed to be paid the to the fixing methods giving how windy the location is.
The overhanging perimeter detail also required significant coordination with the client and site team.
Known as Limelight, after the company managing the building, the towers provide 566 rooms of specialist, high grade accommodation for students.
our approach
AAC Waterproofing were pleased to be appointed as specialist roofing contractors for the installation of the Protan waterproofing system which had been specified for each of the blocks.
Each tower covering an area of approximately 800m2, the Protan 1.6 SE membrane was laid over PIR insulation and is mechanically fixed. A metal deck was laid to direct water to central gutters in the main field area, while the triangular ends of each roof were laid flat but installed with a complex tapered insulation scheme which directs rainwater back to the central channel.
Special attention had to be paid to the security of the mechanically fixed membrane and insulation system, particularly the tapered ends, along with a bespoke gutter system in view of the height of the buildings in the exposed location close to the River Mersey estuary.
Linking the two towers at low level is a reception area which is covered with a blue/green link roof designed to manage water flow into the local drainage system, which was chosen as a more cost-effective and practical option compared to using the standard attenuation tanks. Rainwater from the rooftops drains via the attenuation roof thereby preventing excess surcharge of storm-water.
An overhanging roof edge detail presented challenges during installation, requiring our operatives to install the perimeter waterproofing detailing using harnesses and lanyards attached the roof-top safety cable system along with Cherry pickers.

Our work was independently verified by an electronic integrity test to ensure that the roof is fully waterproof before being signed off by the membrane manufacturer.
On completion, the project comes with a 20-year guarantee
As an additional service to our developer clients, we also arranged an Insurance Backed Guarantee for the project although we are not FSA-approved and do not profit from selling it
